Building Identity Through Narratives:
Who Voices Dissent Within the Party?

Abstract: Who voices dissent within the party? This study leverages big data comprising Tweets and voting records from U.S. Members of Parliament between 2017 and 2023 to explore the correlation between their Twitter narratives and dissent votes in roll call ballots. Incorporating party identity theory and narrative identity theory, this study extracts narrative elements from MPs’ Tweets and establish panel data for analysis. Machine learning based on feature engineering is employed to predict MPs’ dissent votes.
